Have you seen the term “toxic positivity” floating around the internet lately?

This is the belief that even in the most difficult, challenging situations, people should maintain a positive mindset and look for the good.

The argument with toxic positivity, is that

1.) it paints a picture of fake or artificial happiness, just for the sake of having “good vibes”, and
2.) it causes an unrealistic reaction that does not allow the natural loop of emotional responses to take place.

No matter your stance on this idea, being optimistic does not necessarily mean “happy” at all times. It just means that you see life’s stressors, and believe you have the tools to approach any situation in a productive way. This leads to less stress, negative thoughts and builds yourself a toolbox of approaches for any future hardship.

Think about a recent hardship in your life.

Did you choose optimism? Looking back, would you react differently if you could go back?
